Our History
The journey of St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church of Delaware Valley has been a remarkable testament to faith, unity, and perseverance. Since its formation, our church has flourished in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, driven by a shared mission of outreach and commitment to our community. Guided by our motto, “Lighted to Lighten,” our members have brought energy, creativity, and resilience to every phase of building this church, from raising funds and acquiring land to securing zoning and construction approvals. Within three years, we witnessed God’s abundant grace as our vision took shape, resulting in a beautiful sanctuary, a parsonage, and a fully equipped church kitchen.
The Church Building Committee was established in February 2006, comprising 16 dedicated members—12 elected by the General Body and four ex-officio members from the Church Executive Committee. Under the capable leadership of Mr. Saji Jacob as the convener, the committee worked tirelessly to oversee each aspect of the project. The active support of our Church Executive Committee and General Body played a vital role in reviewing and approving key proposals that helped streamline the project, allowing us to move forward with faith and purpose.
Our vicars, Rev. A. C. Kurien and Rev. Shaji M. Thomas, presided over the committee during their respective terms, providing spiritual guidance and encouragement. Mr. Pappachan Mathai, Mr. Joseph Mathew, and Mr. George Abraham served as ex-officio members throughout 2006 and 2007, contributing invaluable insights and leadership. Together, with the support of the wider church community, we laid out a plan for our parish’s future, addressing our growth and spiritual needs over the next decade.
In our search for a location, we initially considered properties across Chester and Delaware Counties, capitalizing on momentum as we assessed our community’s long-term vision. After pursuing various options, we focused on a property in Edgemont Township, refining our understanding of zoning requirements in the process. This experience positioned us well when we discovered our current property at 130 Grubb Road in Malvern in November 2006. Through a welcoming and productive meeting with Willistown Township officials, Mr. William Rosenberry (Zoning Officer) and Mrs. Rita Reeves (Chairman of the Planning Commission), we felt assured and encouraged. With guidance from Mrs. Wendy McLean, Esq., who provided exceptional legal counsel, we navigated the zoning and construction process with confidence.
Consecration / Dedication
On May 3, 2008, Rt. Rev. Dr. Euyakim Mar Coorilos Episcopa, Diocesan Bishop of North America and Europe, consecrated and dedicated the newly built altar and sanctuary of St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church of Delaware Valley. The event was graced by clergy from our diocese and other local churches, along with esteemed guests, including a representative from the Indian consulate, township leaders, Pennsylvania state representatives, and well-wishers from sister parishes across Pennsylvania. The following day, Sunday, May 4, 2008, Thirumeni celebrated Holy Communion in our newly dedicated altar and church.
In August 2008, construction of an adjoining parsonage was completed, offering a comfortable 3-bedroom, 2½-bath residence for our vicar and family. This parsonage was dedicated on August 31, 2008, adding a homely and supportive space for our clergy. By the end of 2008, our church kitchen was also completed, creating a welcoming and functional environment to serve our parish and extend our outreach to the community.
Through every step, we have been blessed by God’s guidance, and we look forward to continuing to live out our church’s mission to be a light that shines in service and faith for years to come.
